Durango girls soccer wins third of last four
The Durango High School girls golf team picked up its second tournament win of the year at the Tiger Invitational at Bookcliff Golf Club on Monday in Grand Junction on Monday.

Two tournaments, two wins for the Durango High School girls golf team.

Led by Madalen Meier’s 81 at the Bookcliff Golf Club on Monday in Grand Junction, the Demons claimed a team victory at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Grand Junction.

Durango shot 48-over-par as a team to finish one shot ahead of the hosts. Battle Mountain was 21 shots back of Durango for third place. It was a big tournament with 14 teams in attendance.

Grand Junction’s Brittlynn O’Dell won the tournament with a 5-over 76. Battle Mountain’s Madi Bennett shot 7-over to take second, while Meier’s 10-over was good for third.

Meier opened with an eagle on the opening hole, a 487-yard par-5. She remained at 2-under through the first three holes before a triple bogey on the fourth. She made the turn at 3-over.

Quinn Griswold had the lowest round of her career for Durango with a 19-over 90, which tied for seventh along with teammate Lilly Tichi. Grace Meyer shot 33-over 104 and recorded the first birdie of her career on the par-4 third hole that played 401 yards. Meyer finished tied for 27th in a field of 70 players.

Also for Durango, three-time state qualifier Faith Mewmaw returned to action and tied for 49th. She shot 46-over.

Next Monday, Durango will return to the area to play a tournament at Adobe Creek National Golf Course, the site of this year’s regional tournament later in the season.

Girls Lacrosse

Durango 20, Montrose 12

Girls LacrosseThe Demons pushed their record to .500 with a resounding road win Tuesday against a league rival.

Durango (3-3, 3-2 Mountain League) won 20-12 behind 12 first-half goals. The host Indians fell to 0-6 this season and 0-5 in league play.

The Demons will hit the road for a pair of games Friday and Saturday. With wins in three of their last four games, the Demons will face Palmer (3-2) at 6 p.m. Friday and Palmer Ridge (2-5) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Girls Soccer

Pagosa Springs 2, Bayfield 0

Girls SoccerA goal in the fifth minute from Nicole Bartz was all the Pagosa Springs High School girls soccer team needed at home Tuesday.

Bartz, a sophomore, was assisted by senior Morgan Thompson on her early goal. It held up as the game-winner, but the Pirates (3-2-2, 2-0-1 Intermountain League) added an insurance goal in the second minute of stoppage time, as Thompson assisted senior Diana Scott for another goal to beat the Bayfield Wolverines 2-0.

Bayfield fell to 1-4 overall with the loss in its league opener. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaden Cooper made 10 saves, while Pagosa Springs goalie Tristen Tulley made 13 saves to keep the shutout win.

BHS will stay on the road for another league contest at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alamosa.

Baseball

Dolores 16, Ignacio 4

BaseballAn early run in the first inning wasn’t enough for the Bobcats, as the Dolores Bears answered back with four more and another three in the second en route to a 16-4 win against Ignacio on Monday.

The Bears (6-4, 3-2 2A District 3/5) tallied 15 hits, including eight doubles, in the five-inning game, while Cameron Chavez pitched a complete game to earn the win. He allowed only two Ignacio hits and four walks that led to four earned runs. He struck out seven.

Gabriel Tucson was the losing pitcher for IHS (0-8, 0-4), and Holland Roukema appeared in relief. Brennan Hite, Isiah Knox and Kevin Purkat each had three hits for the Bears, while Knox and Dakota Smith led the team with three runs batted in each. Hite and Knox each had two doubles.

Ignacio will play Meeker at 11 a.m. Friday and will face Rangely immediately after. Both games will be played at Montrose High School.
