The Demons gave Fruita Monument a scare, but ultimately couldn’t do enough to keep the Wildcats from winning their second 5A/4A Southwestern League title in three years, as the Wildcats prevailed 3-2 in a match that saw both teams playing down a girl Saturday in Fruita.
“It was by far the most physical and toughest game we’ve played in our league,” DHS head coach Robert Logan said. “The girls played some of their best soccer even though they lost 3-2. ... It’s frustrating to lose, but they played a solid, full 80 minutes and that’s nothing to be ashamed about.”
Fruita (11-3, 7-0 SWL) took a 1-0 lead about four minutes into the match, but it didn’t last long thanks to Durango’s Caroline Knight, who bent a long shot into the upper-right corner of the goal to make it 1-1 in the 19th minute. It was the first goal the Wildcats had allowed in league play.
Fruita Monument added two goals on corner kicks late in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Wildcats goalie Peyton Drake was sent off with a red card after colliding with a Durango player in the box. A penalty was awarded to DHS (5-7, 3-3 SWL), but the shot from Taylor Klone was saved by Fruita’s second-string keeper Madison Wimmer.
Shortly after, Durango’s Jael Larson was given her second yellow card of the match, which dropped the Demons down to 10 players.
Kylie Phipps scored Durango’s second goal with about two minutes remaining in the match.
Durango will play at Grand Junction (10-3, 4-2 SWL) on Tuesday.
Bayfield High School’s girls soccer team shook off a slow start with a scoring burst late in the first half that carried the Wolverines to a 4-2 victory against Telluride (7-3) on Saturday at BHS.
“We started kind of slow and they scored first on us,” BHS head coach Jen Moore said. “The last 10 minutes of the first half we played really well and got three goals. Telluride is really good at going to the ball and winning the ball out of the air, so we made adjustments to that at halftime and stuck Halle Loveday in the back. She was our MVP of the day. She was a brick wall back there and added stellar defense back there for us.”
Savannah Kaufman scored three goals for BHS – her third hat trick in as many games – and added one assist. Ariana Grimwood had the other goal. Sophie Turner had two assists, and Loveday had one assist.
Bayfield (7-6, 2-3 3A Region 5) will host Montezuma-Cortez (2-12, 0-9 3A Region 5) on Tuesday, then will close out the season in a nonleague match at Crested Butte (10-1) on Saturday.
