Prep Roundup: Durango girls soccer scores eight in Grand Junction

Demons bounce back against GJ Central

The Durango High School girls soccer team responded from its 0-0 overtime draw against Grand Junction on Saturday by putting on an offensive showcase Monday afternoon against Grand Junction Central en route to an 8-0 win.

DHS scored four times in the first half and added four more in the second half.

Durango (6-4-1, 3-2-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) had five different goal-scorers, which included three players who scored twice.

Ava Konikowski, Clara Krull and Emma Duke all scored twice, while Jael Larson and Sasha Kozak also found the back of the net for DHS. Goal times were not available.

The Warriors (2-9-1, 0-5 SWL) created chances but were unable to score, as Durango recorded its fourth clean sheet of the season and second in as many games.

“We played well on both sides of the ball,” said DHS head coach Jonathan Berzins in a text message.

Durango will be looking for revenge when it hosts Fruita Monument (8-3, 5-0 SWL) after it lost a narrow 1-0 decision earlier this month. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Riverview Elementary School Sports Complex.

Ignacio High School

The Ignacio High School girls soccer team announced that its matchup against Bayfield has been pushed back a day.

The match, originally scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, will now kick off at 5 p.m. Wednesday at IHS.

The Wolverines (5-4, 3-1 Class 3A Intermountain League) are going for their fifth consecutive win, while Ignacio (1-9, 1-6 Class 2A Region 4) is looking for its first win since it took down Center earlier this month.
