The Durango High School girls soccer team is hitting its stride as the Demons head into 5A/4A Southwestern League play next week.
The Demons beat Pueblo West (1-5) Saturday afternoon to win their third consecutive game and four of the last five. Lane Arnwine provided the offensive firepower as she scored two goals, while the defense did enough at the other end to secure a 2-1 win.
Arnwine’s first goal of the day came on a penalty kick goal. She followed up with a nice finish on a corner kick that proved to be the decisive tally. The senior now leads the team with three goals this season.
The Demons got through a difficult non-conference schedule with a 4-3 record, but the remainder of the games will be against SWL league foes.
The first test is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Montrose.
Baseball
BaseballAfter losing the previous matchup 14-0 last weekend, the Ignacio High School baseball team found themselves in a late-inning tie ballgame Saturday in a rematch at Sargent. This time, Juanito Medina provided the clutch performance to sway the outcome in Ignacio’s favor and notch the team’s first victory of the season.
Medina’s seventh-inning, two-out grounder couldn’t be corralled by the Farmers’ infield, and Timmy Plehinger-Williams crossed the plate as the go-ahead run. Medina struck out two in a perfect final inning and earned the win in the 6-5 victory. He pitched three innings, allowed one run on three hits while striking out six with zero walks.
Zach Weinreich got the start on the mound for Ignacio (1-3) and gave up three earned runs in four innings pitched. He walked three and struck out four, but Weinreich was also a force at the plate. The senior was 2-for-3 on the day with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Ignacio had a three-run lead in the third inning, but Sargent (2-4) chipped away before tying it up with a two-out rally in the fifth.
Plehinger-Williams’ one-out double got the seventh inning going for IHS. He finished the game 1-for-1 with three runs scored, one walk and got hit by a pitch twice.
The Bobcats will try to keep the positive momentum going at noon Saturday against Hotchkiss before playing again at 3 p.m. at Paonia.
