The Durango High School girls tennis team picked up two road wins Saturday at the Glenwood Springs High School Triangular against the hosts and Delta with a pair of 5-2 wins.
In Match 1 against Glenwood, all three singles players won, while the top two doubles teams also won in straight sets.
In Match 2 against Delta, it was a similar story, as two singles players and three out of four doubles teams won their respective matches.
“Today was really windy, but we all had pretty solid matches,” said No. 1 singles player, Emma Hackett. “We’re excited to play in Grand Junction next week for regionals.”
Durango will prepare for the Class 4A Region 8 tournament at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday in Grand Junction.
The Durango High School girls lacrosse team dropped two narrow road contests Saturday in a 10-9 loss to Roaring Fork and a 6-4 loss to Battle Mountain.
In Game 1 against Roaring Fork, Kiara Valley scored six times, while Greta Cahill, Gwyneth Irwin and Rachel Flora all found the back of the net, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
Durango tied the game at nine with just under two minutes remaining, but off of the draw, the Rams (8-2, 8-2 Mountain League) would come down and score the winner shortly after.
In Game 2, Virginia Herr made 16 saves, but it was not enough as the Huskies (8-4, 3-2 ML) held on to win 6-4.
“Both games were super close, back-and-forth games, and it’s a bummer we didn’t come away with the win,” said DHS head coach Natalie Mitchell. “We worked really hard but ultimately lost it in the little things, and those small errors can make or break a game. In the second game, Virginia was amazing and really made some great saves, but, ultimately, our legs got to us and you could tell that we were tired but we didn’t give in.”
DHS (4-7, 3-4 ML) will have its final home game against Telluride at 5 p.m. Monday.
Girls Soccer
Girls SoccerThe Durango High School girls soccer team was unable to get its offense going in the second half and lost 3-0 to Fruita Monument on Saturday at the Riverview Elementary School Sports Complex.
The Wildcats (10-3, 7-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) offense got goals in the 46th, 65th and 70th minutes to take down Durango, which played at Riverview for the second time in three games and were blanked in both matches.
“We showed up ready to play, battled hard, got some good chances and were organized, but we just couldn’t find the net today,” said DHS head coach Jonathan Berzins. “Credit to Fruita, they had great structure and had a couple of chances and they made the most of them.”
The match was tied 0-0 at halftime, but Fruita’s offense came to life and were able to secure the win.
Durango (6-5-1, 2-3-1 SWL) will host its final two home games against Montrose at 5 p.m. Thursday and Grand Junction Central at 1:30 p.m. Saturday back at the high school field.
Melody Lipke opened the scoring in Alamosa’s 6-0 win Saturday with a goal in the third minute, and the Mean Moose didn’t stop there as the Bobcats were unable to register a shot in the game.
The Mean Moose (2-10, 1-5 3A Intermountain League) would go on to score three more times in the first half and led 4-0 at the break. In the second half, they added two more with goals in the 49th and 75th minute to end 6-0.
Ignacio (2-13, 1-7 Class 2A Region 4) got a good game out of backup goalkeeper Jaylene Riepel, who made 19 saves in the loss.
The Bobcats will end the season against Del Norte (9-2-2, 5-1-2 Class 2A Region 4) at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alamosa High School.
After winning five in a row, Bayfield dropped its second consecutive game after it lost 5-1 to Telluride on Saturday at THS.
The Wolverines (6-6, 3-1 IML) got on the board in the 35th minute when Mattie Moore scored on a breakaway to put BHS up 1-0. Two minutes later, the first of two controversial decisions was made when a ball was crossed into Bayfield’s box and the referee issued a handball. According to BHS head coach Jen Moore, it hit a Telluride hand and not a BHS player. The referee did not change his mind, and the Miners converted from the penalty spot to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Telluride scored on a breakaway to go up 2-1. In the 50th minute, the second controversial goal was ruled when a shot hit off of the lower end of the cross bar, bounced down and onto the line – which is not a goal. The referees said the whole ball did cross over and issued a goal to make it 3-1.
“That was a big deflater for us,” Moore said. “It was hard to come back from that just because of how controversial that was. We felt like they gave them two goals and the score doesn’t really reflect how the game went. Without those two goals, it’s a new game.”
The Miners (9-3, 7-2 Class 2A Region 4) would go on to score twice more after the controversial goal to pull away and win 5-1.
Bayfield will play at Montezuma-Cortez (5-5-2, 2-4-1 IML) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Boys Lacrosse
Boys LacrosseThe Durango High School boys lacrosse team was unable to pull off an upset against Mountain League leaders Grand Junction, but one player finally broke the DHS record for career points.
Cullen Robinette scored his 256th point to surpass his older brother Kyle as the all-time points leader in DHS history. He opened the scoring for the Demons, and the ball was kept as a memento. But the good times would be hard to come by for Durango the rest of the way, as the Tigers led 8-4 after the first quarter and were outscored 6-2 in the second and were down 14-6 at half.
“We had a good start there, but we made some mental mistakes, penalties didn’t help us and it was just kind of the same old story,” said DHS coach John Robinette. “We were there for much of that first half, but we had a two-minute non-releasable penalty for a stick to the head and they scored three times, and it was tough to come back from that.”
In the second half, DHS scored once more. Corbin Randle scored twice, as did Rocco Estes, while Tyler Jasmer added one. Robinette finished with two goals and an assist and currently stands at 258 points.
Durango (6-6, 2-6 ML) will have two more chances to help solidify its playoff chances, as it will travel to Aspen on Friday, and will end the regular season against Montrose on Saturday.
