Prep Roundup: Durango High School basketball picks up win against Shiprock Northwest

Fitzgerald, Lee lead way in rout

Durango High School’s girls basketball team got back in the win column Friday with a 58-15 drumming of Shiprock’s Northwest High School (4-4), in the consolation bracket of the Rumble in the Jungle tournament in Aztec.

“Our defense was solid for four quarters, and that led to some easy baskets for us,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “We just played solid and kept proper spacing, not gambling. We just played really solid team defense. We didn’t do anything fancy.”

Emma Fitzgerald and Danielle Lee led the Demons (2-9) with 12 points each, and Hilda Garcia and Tayler Dossey scored eight points each. Ten of the 11 Demons to play in the game scored.

The Demons will face Grants, New Mexico, in the fifth-place game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Aztec. Fitzpatrick said Grants (5-8) will present a challenge with their on-ball pressure, and expects the matchup to be a close one.
