Volleyball
Montezuma-Cortez 3, Bayfield 1, Bayfield 3, Centauri 2

The Bayfield High School volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday after it hosted a 3A Intermountain League triangular meet, falling 3-1 to Cortez and defeating Centauri 3-2.

Montezuma Cortez won the first match of the day 25-21, 27-25, 25-20, 25-23, and in the evening match, Bayfield won in five sets, 26-24, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 and 15-12.

In the win against Centauri, the Wolverines (5-10, 4-4) were led by senior setter Tymbree Florian, who, led BHS in kills with 15. She also had 17 assists and seven digs, which gave her a double-double.

It is rare for a setter to lead a team in kills, but Foutz was able to do just that. Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz was impressed with Florian’s ability to find points.

“Tymbree played incredibly well tonight, and was a competitive force,” Foutz said. “She is a trickster of a setter, very clever, always looking to score.”

Foutz said that strong serving was key in the match against Centauri (5-3, 9-6 IML) and the Wolverines forced the Falcons to run their offense wide and off net, making life difficult. Senior outside hitter Jannika Pope tallied 27 kills in two matches, which led the Wolverines for the day.

Bayfield will travel to Farmington where they will take on Piedra Vista at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Piedra Vista High School.

Ignacio 3, Telluride 2

Ignacio volleyball defeated Telluride Saturday at Telluride in conference, with scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-19, 26-24 and 16-14. Statistics were not made available. The Bobcats (4-11, 3-6, San Juan Basin League) will face Ridgway at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Ridgway High School.
