Montrose defeated Durango 3-1 on Saturday afternoon inside the Durango gymnasium behind efficient play from the Indians’ outside and middle hitters, as the Indians won 25-20, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-20.
Durango got off to a fast start in the first game, getting out to an early 9-3 lead before the Indians hitters started finding their rhythm. Montrose took the lead at 16-15 and would not relinquish it. Durango got within four points twice, at 16-20 and 20-24, but the Indians put the set away the very next point.
In the second set, Durango got off to a slow start, as it went down 0-4 and 4-8 before head coach Colleen Vogt called a timeout. Even after the stoppage in play, the closest the Demons would get would be two points midway through the second set after Kyle Rowland aced the Indians that forced Montrose to call a timeout at 14-16. Montrose responded after the timeout.

However, Durango’s errors were too much to overcome in the final set, as the Demons gave up numerous hitting and service errors to help the Indians to a 25-20 win.
Taylor Wolf led the Demons with 12 kills on the afternoon.
“I was proud of them,” Vogt said. “We were missing our captain today (Milie O’Ketter), but I was really proud of the way the younger girls and all of the girls stepped up. We still made too many unforced errors, but I still thought we played really well.”

“We came out a little bit complacent against our opponent today,” said Demons head coach Aaron Champenoy. “We didn’t respect our opponent enough, got an easy goal and let them climb back into it. We talked to them about having more intensity and putting in the effort that we knew it would take. The second half was much better and we dominated the field of play, our conditioning took over and we found a way to get that second goal and got the result.”
Durango will visit Montrose at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
