Two big runs in the bottom of the seventh inning kept the Demons alive for another two, but it wasn’t enough to hold back the Trojans.
Down 6-4 going to the bottom of the seventh inning, Durango scored a pair of runs to tie the game and force extras. But Fountain-Fort Carson put up five runs in the ninth inning, and Durango High School couldn’t find a second answer in an 11-6 loss Monday afternoon at DHS.
Rayn Stratton, a Fountain-Fort Carson senior, was 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Garrett Thibault was 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and three RBIs for the Trojans (8-5).
Gus Kidd had two RBIs for Durango (9-6), as he went 1-for-5. Dawsom Marcum was 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and a run, Jordan Woolverton went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs, and Ryan Genualdi went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Max Hyson also went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Fynn Hyson pitched six innings for the Demons. He allowed five hits and walked two while he gave up four runs, three earned. He struck out six. Kegan D’Aleo pitched three innings. He gave up seven hits and seven runs – five earned – while he struck out four and walked one.
Thibault pitched six innings for the Trojans. He allowed nine hits and four runs – three earned – while he struck out three and walked one. Nate Lengeman pitched three innings and allowed five hits, two runs and struck out three.
DHS (3-3 SWL) has four games left on the schedule, with a home cross-county rivalry game against Bayfield at 3 p.m. Tuesday. DHS then will close out play in the 5A/4A Southwestern League at first-place Fruita Monument (11-4, 4-0 SWL) on May 4-5. DHS and Bayfield will meet a second time May 8 in Bayfield.
The comeback bid of the Ignacio High School baseball team came up a little short, as the Bobcats fell to Dove Creek 8-6 Tuesday in Dove Creek.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull even with the Bulldogs at 6-6, but Dove Creek answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning then blanked the Bobcats in the seventh to secure the victory.
Dove Creek (8-8) scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, got two in the third, one in the fourth, then two in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bulldogs had seven hits from seven different players. Hayden Gray went 1-for-2 with a double and one run batted in, and Gage Bailey, Derek Kibel and Branson Smith drove in one run each.
Kibel also stole three bases and earned the win on the mound. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up five hits and struck out two batters. Only two of the six runs against him were earned.
The Bobcats (4-12) got two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth innings.
Individual stats for IHS were not available.
IHS will play at Dolores (6-9) on Saturday.
Boys Lacrosse
Boys LacrosseDurango High School’s boys lacrosse team made a long road trip to Santa Fe and the Demons made sure it was worth their time.
DHS (7-3) took charge for a 16-2 advantage at halftime and cruised the rest of the way for a 20-5 victory against Santa Fe Prep (3-2) on Tuesday.
DHS head coach John Robinette said he was happy with the Demons’ ability to win 19-of-25 faceoffs and their high shooting percentage.
The Demons put 27 shots on goal in the game. Cullen Robinette led the attack with six goals and one assist. Ryan Smith netted four goals and had three assists, Tommy Rodgers had three goals and three assists, and Corbin Randle added three goals and one assist. Matt Tucker chipped in one goal and one assist, and Rocco Estes had one goal.
Harrison Kairalla was 11-for-12 on faceoffs, led the Demons with nine groundballs, and had two goals and one assist.
Dylan Gaver made 11 saves in goal for DHS.
The Demons will play at Fruita Monument (8-4) on Friday.
Girls GolfThe Durango High School girls golf team came away with a second-place finish at the Dolores Invitational on Monday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.
The Demons shot a team score of 288. Aztec won the tournament with a score of 286. Dolores was third with a 292. Six teams competed at the tournament.
Dolores’ Dimery Plewe took medalist honors with a 15-over 87.
Quinn Griswold posted the low round for DHS with a 93. She made four pars in her round.
Madalen Meier shot a 95 and Lily Tichi fired a 100 to round out DHS’ scoring team. Faith Mewman and Grace Meyer shot 101 and 111, respectively, for the Demons.
DHS will play one more tournament before regionals, with a trip Monday to Gunnison to play Dos Rios Golf Club.
