The Durango High School boys soccer team made two trips north in three days. The Demons covered more than 1,000 miles on the bus, but earning two wins during that span helped soften the travelers.
Two days after a 2-1 win at Fruita Monument, the Class 4A second-ranked Demons (4-0, 2-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) took down another Class 5A team with a 5-0 win at Grand Junction Central.
Elijah Fenton scored two goals, while other goals came from Jack Beattie, Logan Fullington and Max Wilson.
Fenton now has five goals this season.
“It was good for us to get some players that were kind of struggling around the goal to score,” said DHS head coach Dalon Parker. “It’s also good to see kids that are scoring keep scoring. It’s a good situation.”
Parker estimated the team had another six to eight good scoring opportunities in the match that were not converted. But, with all the travel in the last week, he was happy to see players consistently find success.
Assists were recorded by Garret Krispin, Bryce Diethrich, Leland Heinicke and William Lammons.
Parker said the Demons spread out the Warriors (1-4, 0-1 SWL). That made the opponent tired, while the Demons continued to control the ball.
Next up for Durango is a 9 a.m. Saturday match at home against Evergreen (1-3).
“Evergreen has lost a few times this year, but to really good opponents,” Parker said. “They are going to want to come in here and get some revenge from when we beat them at their place last year. We did that while they were on a winning streak, and they want to return the favor to us, especially with us having a target on our back of being highly ranked.”
Volleyball
VolleyballA tough night serving cost the Bobcats.
Ignacio High School’s volleyball team recorded 13 aces as a team but committed 27 service errors in a 3-1 loss to Dove Creek.
The Bulldogs (3-2) defeated the Bobcats 25-16, 27-25, 14-25, 25-19.
IHS (0-2) led 25-24 in the second game with a set point, but errors let the set get away.
Still, the Bobcats wouldn’t go down without a fight, taking a 10-9 lead in the third set en route to the lopsided set win.
Makayla Howell closed out the third set with a big kill. She led the team with 11 kills and 10 digs. She also had six blocks.
Morgan Herrera had six kills and three digs. Shoshone Thompson finished with 23 assists and three aces. Kianna Valdez also had three aces. Caitlyn Mulcahy had six digs.
