The Durango High School boys soccer team scored four times in the first half and added two more in a 6-1 win over Grand Junction Central Friday night in Durango.
Durango’s Moritz Rosik opened the scoring with a goal in the second minute to go up 1-0. Eight minutes later, the Warriors (2-7, 0-5 5A/4A Southwestern League) responded through Alex Garcia to make it 1-1 in the 10th minute.
Durango rolled from there, as Leland Heinicke scored in the 12th minute and Sayer Frontella found the back of the net in the 28th minute. Heinicke scored his second goal of the match just minutes before halftime to make it 4-1 Demons at the break. DHS had second-half goals from Frontella and Aiden Arujo.
“It’s a good win, but there’s still some things to work on,” said DHS head coach Aaron Champenoy. “We just never really got in the rhythm of the first half, and we struggled to find intensity after beating them 10-0 at their place. The second half, the young guys got some chances and played well. Tomorrow is going to be a far different test against Evergreen.”
DHS (7-3, 3-1 SWL) will host Evergreen (3-6, 2-1 4A Jefferson County) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Durango High School volleyball team opened the Battle Mountain tournament with back-to-back losses on Friday.
The Demons (6-5, 2-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) lost 3-0 to Alamosa, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-14, and then lost later in the afternoon to Battle Mountain, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-23.
“I thought we played hard, did some really good things and had some people step up,” said DHS head coach Colleen Vogt. “We just need to keep playing hard and eliminate our mistakes. We’re looking to bounce back tomorrow and finish 2-2.”
In the first game against the Mean Moose (14-1, 6-0 3A Intermountain League), Sydney Summers led the team with eight kills, while Paige Ammerman just fell short of a double-double with 13 digs and nine assists in the loss.
In the second game against Battle Mountain (9-2, 4-2 4A Western Slope), Summers led the Demons again with nine kills, while Ammerman recorded 17 assists.
DHS will take on Vail Mountain (7-5, 7-2 2A Western Slope) at 8 a.m. Saturday in Edwards.
The Durango High School boys and girls cross-country teams got a good glimpse at the regional course, as the boys team won Friday’s Pantherfest in Delta with 67 points, while the girls finished in second-place with 63 points.
On the boys side, the Demons edged league foe Grand Junction Central by 12 points. Fruita Monument was third with 84 points, and Moffat County was fourth with 108. Fruita Monument took home the team title on the girls side with 59 points. DHS was four points behind the Wildcats. Basalt took third with 76 points, and Glenwood Springs was fourth with 89.
Luke Tichi won his second race in the last three weeks, as he won in 15 minutes, 46.98 seconds. Teammate Paul Knight took second in 16:07. Durango’s Land Lambert finished ninth in 17:02.
Tea Forrest led the DHS girls, as she finished in 19:29 to take ninth. Ashley Forrest was 10th in 19:42. Kiara Hamlin had her strongest race of the year and took 12th in 19:44, while Sophie Ragsdale was 13th in 19:45. Basalt’s Sierra Bower won the race in 17:40.
“This is a look at the regional course, and it was a big motivator for us,” said DHS head coach Ken Flint. “It should give them familiarity and confidence in a few weeks. Both teams ran really well. For the guys, Luke and Paul are a great 1-2 punch for us. And once again, the girls just have some depth. I like their fight and the way they compete.”
DHS will train for the Class 4A Region 5 meet Oct. 18 at Confluence Park in Delta
