Prep Roundup: Durango soccer on a roll, tennis team’s season ends

The Durango High School soccer team won its seventh consecutive game Friday afternoon, and they’ve had some statement wins in the midst of the streak.

The Demons made another statement Friday with a shutout win at Pueblo Centennial, a team that came into the matchup with a 10-1 record. Durango took it to Pueblo Centennial as Corbin Lyman, Connor Henry and Rodrigo Morales scored the goals for the scorching hot Demons.

“It was another good test for us, and the boys just keep rolling along,” Demons head coach Dalon Parker said. “They’ve got something special going now, but we have to keep it going and there’s another tough test in front of us (Saturday).”

Trey Furnas needed just three saves to secure his seventh shutout of the season between the pipes for the now 9-1 Demons, who will look to make it eight in a row Saturday at Pueblo Central.

Boys TennisThe Durango High School tennis team’s season came to an end Friday at regionals in Grand Junction.

As a team, DHS took third place of at the four-team regional with Aspen, Vail Mountain and Steamboat.

The Demons’ No. 1 singles player Fred Edwards had another incredible season, but was bounced by Steamboat’s top singles player 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to keep him from making another trip to the state tournament.

Nick Cheney-Roberts and Micah Hwang each finished in third place as singles players as did the doubles teams for DHS.

“Our singles held it down all year, and I’m proud of what they accomplished,” Durango head coach Alan Batiste said. “It’s a really good group of kids and we got better as a unit as the season went on. That’s all I can ask as a coach.”
