The Durango High School boys soccer team took the bus north on U.S. Highway 550 this weekend in search of its third consecutive 5A/4A Southwestern League title.
Friday at Montrose (5-8, 2-5 5A/4A Southwestern League), they took care of the first step. The Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A’s seventh-ranked Demons (11-1, 5-1 5A/4A SWL) used goals from Max Wilson and Rodrigo Morales to beat the Indians by a score of 2-0 for the second time this season.
Duncan Calkin assisted on Wilson’s goal, and goalkeeper Trey Furnas made five saves to record the ninth shutout of the season for DHS. The win was the Demons’ ninth in a row since losing to Fruita Monument 1-0 on Sept. 3 in Durango.
Saturday, DHS will get a chance to return the favor and avenge its only loss of the season and win another league title in an 11 a.m. matchup with the Wildcats.
“We didn’t want to overlook anyone, but I know the boys have been looking forward to this game for awhile,” Demons head coach Dalon Parker said. “We’re well-prepared and we’ve gotten better as the year has gone on, so I’m confident that the boys will be able to handle whatever comes their way.”
Senior Night for the Bayfield High School boys soccer team brought out an emotional and physical match with league rival Crested Butte.
The Wolverines (4-5-4, 3-5-3 3A Intermountain League) fell behind in the opening minutes, as Merlin Mapes snatched the momentum of the special occasion with a fifth-minute goal that gave the Titans (6-4-1, 6-1-1 3A IML) a quick 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way for the next 62 minutes before Bayfield finally evened the score. Tilden Berriman’s equalizer tied the match and sent it to extra time.
Neither team could tally a score in the extra minutes and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Bayfield will travel to take on the Durango High School junior varsity team at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
