The Durango High School softball team made history on Saturday in a two-game sweep over league foes Grand Junction, as the Demons beat the Tigers for the first time in team history.
Durango (7-3, 2-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) won Game 1 14-13 on a walk-off inside-the-park home run from freshman Alaysia Kremer on a play that featured two throwing errors from the Tigers. In Game 2, the Demons never trailed and won 9-6.
Emma Candelaria continued to hit the ball well, as she hit two home runs and went 6-for-8 in the series, with six RBIs and four stolen bases. In Game 1, Tori Raybourn was effective in the pitchers’ circle, as she struck out eight in a complete-game effort, and was 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs. Jacey Jeep recorded a triple, had three base-on-balls and scored three times. She faced 30 pitches in four plate appearances and was a tough out.
The Demons scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, which was capped off by Kremer’s heroics.
In Game 2, Reyes pitched a complete game with strong defense behind her, as she struck out three. At the plate, Kremer went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Mia Baguskas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. On the day, DHS scored in 11 out of 14 innings.
DHS will host Montezuma-Cortez to finish a makeup game at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by the previously scheduled game at 3 p.m. at Durango High School.
Soccer
SoccerThe Durango High School boys soccer team extended its winning streak to three games, after it took down The Academy 6-0 on Saturday at Durango High School.
The Demons (4-2, 1-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) got goals from three players, as Sayer Frontella and defensive midfielder Logan Stettler scored twice, while Leland Heinicke and Moritz Rosik also added goals in the win.
“It’s three wins in a row now, and hopefully we can build some momentum,” said DHS head coach Aaron Champenoy. “The level of competition is going to pick up quite a bit, as we’re getting into the heart of league play.”
The Academy (1-2, 1-0 3A Frontier League), ranked No. 8 in the latest Colorado High School Activities Association, conceded four goals in the first half, and two in the second.
DHS will host Grand Junction (1-5-1, 1-0 SWL) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Durango High School.
Crested Butte scored twice in the first half and added a third early in the second to top the Bayfield boys soccer team 3-0 on Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
The Titans (5-2) got the game’s opening goal in the 24th minute when Cedar Fessenden cashed in on a rebound to make it 1-0. They scored 12 minutes later, when Jamis Matlock headed home a cross to make it 2-0. In the 45th minute, Gabi Marmolejo made it 3-0. BHS (0-5) was outshot 6-1 in the loss. The Wolverines will travel to Pagosa Springs (0-5) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Cross-country
Cross-countryThe Bayfield High School boys cross-country team dominated its home meet on Saturday, held at the Pine River Church in Bayfield, as the Wolverines scored 19 points to top Aztec at the Bayfield XC Invitational.
Elco Garcia won the race in 18 minutes, 3 seconds, while Zeb Shields was second in 18:22, and Jonas Nanaeto rounded out the top three in 19:15. The Wolverines also locked up the 9-12 spots in the race. Aztec took second in the team standings with 42 points. No other team had more than five runners and did not register a team score.
“It was a really good showing on our boys part,” said BHS head coach Josh Walton. “We keep rolling. The boys wanted to perform well at our own meet, and they wanted to win the trophy this year, after Pagosa beat us last year. They were really focused and all did very well.”
Montezuma-Cortez won the girls meet with 24 points while Aztec took second with 33 points. Ignacio High School’s Avalaeena Nanaeto took sixth overall, in 26:42, while Eli Lon of Bayfield was 10th in 28:41.
Volleyball
VolleyballThe Bayfield High School volleyball team split its matches at the Lewis-Palmer Invitational Tournament on Saturday, as the Wolverines finished 2-2.
Bayfield (4-2, 1-0 3A Intermountain League) lost its opening two matches, in 2-0 defeats to Windsor, and hosts Lewis-Palmer, the No. 1 team in CHSAA’s Class 4A poll. However, the Wolverines rebounded in the afternoon matches, as they beat Thompson Valley in three sets, 25-23, 13-25 and 15-8. BHS then took out Montrose, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, in three sets as well, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-13.
BHS will take on Farmington at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bayfield High School.
The Class 2A No.7 Ignacio High School volleyball team returned to winning ways on Saturday, as it took down Ouray (0-4, 0-2 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) in three sets, 25-10, 25-10 and 25-21.
The Bobcats (4-1, 2-1 SJBL) were led by Alexis Pontine, who had a team-high eight kills, while freshman Grace Gonzales had seven, and senior Makayla Howell had four. Setter Marisa Carmenoros recorded 11 service aces, and junior Jayden Brunson recorded 14 assists in the win. IHS finished with a hitting percentage of .281.
The Bobcats will host Telluride at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ignacio High School.
