Bad bounce for Bayfield, Demons softball opener spoiled

The Durango Demons boys tennis team took its shot at some of the best in the state at this weekend’s Western Slope Invitational in Grand Junction.

No. 1 singles player Fred Edwards of Bayfield High School finished the day with three match wins and one loss to lead the Demons. Edwards will play Saturday in the championship bracket’s consolation match after dropping a tough match to the No. 1 singles player from Overland.

Also getting wins for the Demons was No. 2 singles player Nick Cheney-Roberts, who went 1-3 on the day, and No. 3 Micah Hwang, who also finished Friday 1-3.

No. 1 doubles team of Rory Walker and Jack Beekman and No. 2 Kieren Brook and Ian Osby also went 1-3 on Friday.

Play starts at Canyon View Park at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Boys Soccer

Alamosa 2, Bayfield 1

A really bad break cost the Bayfield boys soccer team the game Friday against Alamosa.

With the score tied 1-1, a ball was deflected off a Wolverines (1-2-1) player and ended up in an own goal. The tough bounce was the game-winner for the Mean Moose (2-2) as they walked off with a 2-1 win.

William Reyes scored the lone goal for Bayfield and Findlay Marshall had the assist.

Bayfield will play its first home game at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Pagosa Springs.

Softball

The DHS softball team had its home opener spoiled on Friday against Delta.

The Demons (3-5) lost both games of the doubleheader as the Panthers (3-5) won the first game 12-5 and took the second matchup 16-1.

Durango has some time to work out the kinks before the next scheduled game when the Demons head to Cortez at 5 p.m. Sept. 20.
