The Durango High School volleyball team lost in three sets to Fruita Monument 25-19, 25-16, 29-27 Friday at DHS, but the performance was such a big turnaround from the two teams’ previous meeting that the Demons have nothing to complain about.
“It was close. I think we were down 23-18 and they had set point at 24-20 and we fought all the way back. It was amazing,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said of the third set. “Really, it feels like we won tonight. Honestly, with the way our defense played, our offense played, our blocks, I couldn’t have asked for more. Obviously, I would have liked for it to end different, it ended on a whistle again, which is unfortunate, but we played lights out.”
The Demons’ defense was superb.
Five different players recorded double-digit digs. Brett Rowland had 28 digs, Lana Razma finished with 26, Ally Snow recorded 23, Millie O’Ketter had 18 and Lily Chick finished with 14.
At the net, Taylor Wolf recorded five blocks and Sierra Martin had four blocks.
Brianna Brown finished with 29 assists to help the offense.
The Wildcats (17-1, 7-0 Southwestern League) secured the league title with the win.
Durango (12-5, 5-2 SWL) will host Montrose (8-9, 2-4 SWL) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Armando Lerma scored his second consecutive game-winning goal, this time in overtime, as the Bayfield High School boys soccer team beat Telluride 3-2 in overtime Friday in Telluride to end the regular season.
BHS finished the year with its best regular-season record in program history at 12-3 overall. The Wolverines went 9-3 in Class 3A Intermountain League play to finish second behind Ridgway (13-2, 11-1 IML).
BHS built a 2-0 lead Friday before Telluride came back. Tilden Berriman scored in the 24th minute for BHS. It was his 21st goal of the year. Dylan Doskocil scored his first goal of the year for BHS in the 50th minute on a penalty kick.
Telluride answered with goals in the 8th and 74th minutes by Vilius Zydelis and Ian Enkema, respectively.
Lerma scored his fourth goal of the year in the first overtime to give BHS the win.
The Wolverines will go to the postseason for the first time since the 2005 season.
Sloan Mazur was the lone Bayfield High School runner to qualify for the state championship race Oct. 28 in Colorado Springs.
Mazur finished 12th in the 3A Region 1 race at Delta. He finished in 17 minutes, 38.85 seconds. The top 15 runners and top four teams at regionals qualify for state.
Bayfield finished fifth as a team with 175 points and was only six points behind Olathe for the fourth-and-final spot for state. Gunnison won the region with 28 points. Moffat County was second with 56 points, and Pagosa Springs placed third with 114. Montezuma-Cortez placed 11th out of 13 schools with 243 points.
Bayfield’s Jonas Nanaeto was 27th, and Elco Garcia placed 33rd. Nathan Carloson was 47th for the Wolverines, and Ryla Ross placed 56th. Xander Hoevenstine was 87th and Ethan Cook placed 91st.
The BHS girls didn’t have enough runners to field a full team. Olivia Keitz placed 67th and Sarah Ruybal was 90th. Mylee Sanders rounded out the team’s results in 90th.
Steamboat Springs’ girls won the 3A Region 1 championship as a team with 44 points. Moffat County, Gunnison and Aspen all qualified for state.
