The Durango High School volleyball team went 1-1 at Day 1 of the Ponderosa Tournament in Parker, as they were swept by Niwot but rebounded for their first victory over Fruita Monument this season.
In the first match of the day against Niwot, the Demons were swept 18-25, 15-25 and 22-25. Sophomore outside hitter Kyle Rowland recorded 14 digs in the loss, while sophomore setter Paige Ammerman had 16 assists. Junior outside hitter Millie O’Ketter led the way with nine kills.
In the second match, the Demons defeated conference foe Fruita Monument in straight sets 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21. Durango (9-11, 3-5 5A/4A Southwestern League) finally got the better of the Wildcats (17-3, 8-0 SWL) after falling the previous two times. Ammerman set up multiple Demons as she recorded 16 assists, while senior middle blocker Sierra Martin and O’Ketter led DHS with seven kills. Senior middle blocker Taylor Wolf registered four aces in the win.
“The third time’s the charm for Fruita,” said Demons coach Colleen Vogt. “I thought we played so well from point one. Our blocking, defense and our serving was incredible. We just played with a lot of confidence today and hopefully that will carry into tomorrow.”
The Demons will play Rock Canyon at 10 a.m. Saturday in Parker.
