The Durango High School volleyball team got homecoming night started in style with a 3-0 win against Grand Junction.
The Demons (10-5, 4-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) wrapped up their home schedule with an emphatic victory with set wins of 25-8, 25-20 and 25-13 against the Tigers (7-12, 2-4 SWL). It was a perfect way to send out seniors Millie O’Ketter, Emmy Romero, Kiley Ryan and Sydney Summers.
“It was great, especially knowing we have Montrose and Fruita next weekend and now have the opportunity to play for a league championships,” said DHS head coach Colleen Vogt. “It felt good to play that well tonight.”
Vogt was especially happy to see Ryan get a chance to play, as she has a torn meniscus.
“She killed it,” Vogt said of her injured senior. “Millie was great on the back row and front row all night. Emmy also had a great night spreading the offense and played great defense. It was a great team win all around, and the seniors were incredible.”
O’Ketter led Durango with 10 kills and 16 digs. Romero dished out 14 assists. Paige Ammerman, a junior, had eight kills, 14 assists and five aces.
Next weekend, Durango will face Fruita Monument (8-6, 4-2 SWL) at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Montrose (14-3, 5-1 SWL) at 11 a.m. Saturday. Durango is the lone SWL team to beat Montrose this year, 3-2, but the Demons fell 3-0 to Fruita earlier this season.
“It’s a great time to be peaking and playing our best volleyball,” Vogt said. “From the very beginning, this team has been so enjoyable and worked so hard. It’s a fun team to coach.”
Durango High School’s No. 1 doubles team of Kai Skowlund and Aedan Hall won their first game against Aspen all year Friday at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A state tennis tournament, but the duo was unable to pull off the win.
The Demons got a playback match and led early in the opening set 2-1, but would go on to lose in straight sets to AHS’ Lukee Tralins and Georges Ghali, 6-3, 6-1. In another good effort, Hall and Skowlund were tough to beat, as the match went to deuce in 11 of the 12 games.
“They played awesome,” said DHS head coach Todd Jolley. “We’re all stocked and have lots of ideas for next year.”
