Prep Roundup: Ignacio baseball beats another 3A team in Montezuma-Cortez

DHS boys lacrosse wins 10th games

Despite going down 2-0 after the top of the first inning, the Bobcats wouldn’t let a hot start by Montezuma-Cortez ruin their final home game.

Ignacio High School’s baseball team rallied for a run in the first, third and fourth innings to secure a 3-2 victory on senior day against the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers. It was the second win against a Class 3A Intermountain League team in the last eight days for the 2A Bobcats.

Kai Roubideaux pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Bobcats (8-8, 5-5 2A District 3/5). He gave up four hits and two unearned runs in the seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked two. He also turned a double play in the seventh inning after snagging a comebacker to the mound and doubling off a runner at first base.

The first inning saw a few errors that led to the Cortez runs, but great plays also helped the Bobcats avoid a worse inning. Dalton Lebarthe threw a runner out at home plate from left field, as Nate Herrera put down the tag. Herrera also threw a runner out trying to steal.

Ignacio earned the win with only two hits against the Panthers (8-8, 6-2 3A Intermountain League). Timmy Plehinger-Williams had both of those hits. He finished 2-for-3 and reached on an error in the first inning. He scored the winning run in the fourth when he stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the Cortez catcher.

Coby Baer pitched a complete game for the Panthers. He allowed three runs – only one earned – as he walked two, hit one batter and struck out eight.

Ignacio scored in the first, as leadoff hitter Marcus Chapman drew a walk and stole second and third bases. He then scored on a groundout by Rendon Mestas.

The Bobcats added another in the third inning as leadoff man Trace Lovelace was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Baer, and a Cole McCaw safety squeeze bunt scored Lovelace.

Ignacio will end the regular season at Montezuma-Cortez at 11 a.m. May 6.
