A combination of strong play by the Ignacio Bobcats and ugly play by the Bayfield Wolverines led to a big baseball upset Tuesday.
The Wolverines of Bayfield visited Ignacio for a non-league Pine River Rivalry game. The Class 2A Bobcats (5-7, 3-4 2A District 3/5) used an early two-run home run by Marcus Chapman and put the ball in play all game to secure a 9-2 win against Class 3A Bayfield (9-4, 6-0 3A Intermountain League).
Bayfield committed six errors in the game, while the Bobcats racked up 15 hits and committed only one error of their own. Bayfield was limited to four hits.
Ignacio jumped up 3-0 after one inning and 6-0 after the second. Chapman hit his homer in the second inning.
It was 8-1 Bobcats after three innings and 9-1 after five, with Bayfield tacking on one run in the top of the seventh.
“It was probably the worst game the guys have played all season,” BHS head coach Danny Petrie said. “We were mentally not prepared, flat and didn’t swing the bat. A ton of defensive and mental errors. It was pretty bad.”
Andrew Morgan started the game pitching for Bayfield. Aside from the Champman homer, Petrie was mostly happy with his starting pitcher.
“He got grounders and the stuff he needed, we just had no defense behind him,” Petrie said. “They were hitting him, but not hard.”
Ignacio’s statistics were not made available at press time Tuesday.
Up next for Ignacio is a 1 p.m. Thursday game at home against Dove Creek. Bayfield will host a key league doubleheader against Alamosa starting at 3 p.m. Monday.
“We’ve been without three regular starters, and hopefully we get them back,” Petrie said. “We will regroup and get back to work. Everyone is frustrated with this loss. They were feeling good after a couple wins against Centauri, but we gotta get back to work and get our cohesion back as a team.”

Girls SoccerThree days after stunning the Mean Moose and handing their 3A Intermountain League rival their first loss of the season, Bayfield returned home to try to do it again.
The Wolverines weren’t so fortunate in the second meeting in as many games between the two teams, as Bayfield lost Tuesday at home to Alamosa, 3-1. Alamosa (7-2, 4-2 IML) had a pair of tough games last weekend, losing 2-1 to Bayfield on Friday and 1-0 to Pagosa Springs on Saturday. The Wolverines (4-6, 3-3 IML) didn’t have to play Saturday and prepared for the rematch with the Moose.
The Moose led 1-0 at halftime and secured the win with two more second-half goals.
BHS will stay home for another game at 4 p.m. Thursday against Montezuma-Cortez.
