The Ignacio High School boys basketball team started off its season with a convincing win over the Colorado Springs School in the first round of the Limon Tournament on Friday.
The Bobcats (1-0), ranked No. 10 in the preseason Class 2A poll, had three scorers in double figures in a 70-43 win. Brady McCaw led Ignacio with 15 points, Keegan Schurman had 13 points and Bryce Finn had 10.
“I thought we were really weak on defense, and there’s a lot to learn there,” said IHS head coach Chris Valdez. “We were good on our transition games at times, but we did have some balance in scoring, which was nice.”
Ignacio will face the winner of Crowley County and No. 3 Limon at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Durango High boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday at the second day of the Marv Sanders Invitational at Farmington High School, as the Demons pulled away from Aztec to earn a 47-36 victory.
Durango (1-2) was led by Jordan Woolverton, who had 16 points, while Anthony Flint had 15 points and AJ Carlson recorded nine rebounds.
“It’s always nice to get the first win, but we have to be better tomorrow,” said DHS head coach Alan Batiste.
DHS will play Farmington (1-1) in the final game of the tournament at 5 p.m. Saturday at FHS.
The Bayfield High boys basketball team played well but still came up short in Friday’s 70-52 loss to Kent Denver in the first round of the Herman Schayes Tournament in Denver. The Wolverines (0-2) could not stop Kent Denver’s Logan Schayes, who had a game-high 21 points. BHS was led by Landon Kennedy, who finished with 20 points, all off of the bench.
BHS will face The Pinnacle (0-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Denver.
Girls BasketballThe Ignacio High girls basketball team opened up its season on Friday at the Limon Tournament with an impressive win over Colorado Springs School in its first game of the season.
The Bobcats, ranked No. 10 in the CHSAA Class 2A preseason poll, used a strong second half to pull away for a 42-26 win. Shelcie Gosney led Ignacio (1-0) with 15 points, while Ebonee Gomez and Avaleena Nanaeto each had five.
Ignacio will face No. 1 Limon at 4 p.m. Saturday in the tournament championship game.
The Durango High girls basketball team lost in the second day of the Mountain Top Tournament on Friday in La Jara to hosts Centauri 61-32.
Centauri, No. 6 in Class 3A, outscored DHS 19-5 in the second quarter and was able to hold on to the win. The Demons (1-1) were led by Jael Larson and Mason Rowland, who each had seven points.
“We knew it was going to be tough, and Centauri exposed some of our weaknesses,” said DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick. “We learned a lot, and I believe we can bounce back from this.”
DHS will play Montezuma-Cortez (1-1) at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Centauri.
