The Ignacio High School girls basketball team tasted defeat at home for the first time all season, as the Bobcats fell to Class 3A juggernaut Pagosa Springs 56-30 on Tuesday night at IHS.
The Class 2A Bobcats weren’t at 100 percent in the game, as Morgan Herrera dealt with a shoulder injury and Avionne Gomez battled foul trouble in the first half, but the team never slowed down or admitted defeat.
“The girls came to play. They came to play in the sense that they hustled hard every possession, they battled every possession and played with so much heart,” IHS head coach Trae Seibel said. “They competed so hard and played so hard and they have so much fire and heart.”
Shots didn’t fall for the Bobcats (15-2), who struggled from the free-throw line and at times lacked the crisp execution on the offensive end that has led them to so much success this season. Seibel said that had the Bobcats played to the level they’re capable of, they would have been right with the Pirates (15-3).
Herrera battled through her injury to lead the Bobcats with 11 points. Allisianna Baker-Marquez added six points and Gomez finished with five points.
Ignacio (10-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) will get back into league play on Thursday when the team faces Mancos (3-13, 3-8 SJBL) in Mancos.

Boys BasketballA rough start with poor shooting sent the Durango High School boys basketball team to a 59-26 loss against Pagosa Springs on Tuesday night in Pagosa Springs.
“It wasn’t good from the start,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “We struggled scoring and couldn’t shoot it tonight. We were getting good looks, but the shots weren’t falling.”
The Demons were without leading scorer Seth Johnson, and his presence was missed as much on the defensive end, as Pagosa Springs’ Isaiah Griego and Mason Snarr dominated the paint. Batiste said that behind the big guys down low, the Pirates (14-5) shot close to 70 percent from the floor.
Individual stats were not available, but Batiste said the Demons got a boost from senior Chase Summers off the bench.
“He brought some energy,” Batiste said of Summers. “He hasn’t got a lot of time this season, but when he got in there I really like the energy he brought. He was in there on almost every rebound and was working hard.”
The Demons (4-17, 2-5 5A/4A Southwestern League) will close out the regular season Friday at Montrose (15-6, 5-2).
