The Ignacio High School boys basketball team spread the ball around and five players finished with double-digit scoring, as the Bobcats stayed unbeaten on the season with a 69-45 victory against Dolores (3-3) Tuesday night in Dolores.
“I thought our execution was good,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “We went into a zone because we don’t have a lot of depth, but we got the rebounds we needed to and our shooting was pretty good.”
Lawrence Valdez led Ignacio with 19 points and eight assists. Johnny Valdez added 16 points and six assists. Ocean Hunter finished with 12 points, followed by 11 points from Cole McCaw and 10 points from Ky Roubideaux.
Valdez said he was very happy with the ball movement from the Bobcats and their ability to find the open man.
The Bobcats (2-0) will play Grand County (3-1) from Moab, Utah, at the Montezuma-Cortez tournament Friday in Cortez.
Girls basketball
Girls basketballIgnacio High School’s girls basketball team pushed its record to 4-0 this season with a 43-25 win against Dolores on Tuesday night in Dolores.
The Bobcats’ defense set the tone for the night and came away with 14 steals in the win.
“We played team defense and were able to cause some turnovers,” Ignacio head coach Trae Seibel said. “I’m proud of the way our girls played tonight, especially in a tough environment and we were able to come away with the win. All that matters right now is we have a lot of room to grow and we are 4-0.”
Makayla Howell led the Bobcats with 12 points, and Avionne Gomez added 10.
Ignacio will be off until next week when the Bobcats host Mancos (0-3) on Tuesday.
The Durango High School girls basketball team has been through a rough schedule to open the season, and the brutality of it caught up to the Demons (1-7) on Tuesday night, as they lost control of their game against Farmington (4-4) in the fourth quarter and fell to the Scorpions 53-31 in Farmington.
“I thought we played really well for three quarters, then our defense wasn’t where it needed to be in the fourth quarter,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “But I’m proud of the kids’ effort. They played really hard and we saw some improvements.”
Fitzpatrick said Farmington’s Jordan Vasquez, a 5-foot-10 junior who can play in the post and on the perimeter, created problems for the DHS defense in the fourth that helped the Scorpions pull away.
Emma Fitzgerald led the Demons with nine points, and Fitzpatrick said the sophomore guard came up with a few steals on defense as well. Hilda Garcia added seven points for DHS and battled foul trouble the whole night. And Fitzpatrick said Jael Larson and Danielle Lee provided good minutes off the bench.
The Demons will be off until Tuesday when they host Pagosa Springs (2-1) for their home opener.
