Prep Roundup: Ignacio’s Gomez ties state record

Ignacio girls star makes ten 3-pointers
Ignacio High school basketball player Avionne Gomez put her name in the state record book Thursday night with 10 made 3-pointers, tying the state record for most 3s made by an individual in a girls basketball game.

Avionne Gomez etched her name into the state record book Thursday.

The Ignacio High School junior girls basketball player scored 34 points and made ten 3-point shots to tie the Colorado record for most 3-pointers made by an individual in a girls basketball game.

“I was shaking,” Gomez said of her play in the fourth quarter after finding out she was one 3 away from the mark. “I wanted to break it, or at least tie it.

“It was really special. I wanted to have a good game for the seniors so they could remember their senior night forever. I’m excited to be part of that.”

Gomez’s effort was part of a 78-31 home win against Mancos for the Bobcats (12-6, 9-1 2A San Juan Basin League).

“I had no idea about the record until she hit nine,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “I pulled her out, but my assistant (Trae Seibel) said, ‘Hey coach, she’s one away.’ I turned around to ask Avi if she wanted it. The team answered for her, ‘Yes, we want Avi to go get it.’”

Gomez joined Alamosa’s Kern Alsbaugh, Trinidad’s Ashleigh Ackerman, D’Evelyn’s Holly Reinke and Anna Ptasinski of Regis Jesuit in the record book.

Freshman Morgan Herrera added 17 points and 11 rebounds in her first game as a captain. Seibel gave her the honor before the game.

“I challenged the entire team after our loss to Pagosa on Tuesday,” Seibel said. “Morgan has proven herself on the court and off the court. Her teammates listen to what she has to say. She’s not a very big talker, but when she does, the team listens.”

Up next for Ignacio is a trip Saturday to Ouray. A win would give the Bobcats a league championship via tiebreaker against Norwood. A loss would give the title to Norwood.
