Girls Soccer

Durango 1, Grand Junction 1, 2OT

Girls SoccerTwo goals in the first half would be all the scoring between the Demons and Tigers on Tuesday in Grand Junction.

DHS (5-7-1, 3-3-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) and Grand Junction (10-3-1, 4-2-1 SWL) each scored one goal in the first 40 minutes, but neither could find the net in the second half or two ensuing overtime periods, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Statistics were not available at press time Tuesday.

DHS will finish the regular season at 5 p.m. Friday at home against rival Montrose.

Bayfield 2, Montezuma-Cortez 0

Goals in the 61st and 63rd minutes sent the Wolverines past the Panthers.

Bayfield (8-6, 4-3 3A Region 5) played lights out defense on senior day at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield. The Panthers (2-14, 0-11) were held to only two shots, while BHS attempted 27 shots and put 15 on goal. Lana McKee made one brilliant save in the second half for BHS.

Savannah Kaufmann and Misty Helton, two of the team’s three seniors along with Sophie Turner, scored the two goals for BHS, and Kaufmann picked up an assist on Helton’s goal.

BHS has one game left in the regular season and will travel Saturday to Crested Butte.

Boys Lacrosse

Telluride 14, Durango 11

Boys LacrosseA tough first half cost the Demons on Tuesday in Telluride.

The Miners (5-7, 3-5 Mountain League) took an 11-7 halftime lead and held onto it for a home win against Durango High School (7-5, 2-5 ML).

“Team defense (in the) first half was not so great,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “We played better D in the second half and held them to three goals. They have one of the best faceoff guys in the state. We were 4-of-20. Hard to score when you don’t have the ball.”

Dylan Gaver made 18 saves in goal for DHS, and he looked to have scored a goal in the second half to bring the score within one, but the referee ruled DHS was offsides. Robinette said DHS was not offsides and that it was a turning point in the game, as Telluride quickly scored after the ruling.

Ryan Smith led DHS with four goals. Cullen Robinette had three goals and two assists. Tommy Rodgers added two goals, and Dillon Sheehan and Matt Tucker each had one goal.

DHS will play at 4 p.m. Thursday at Grand Junction, 4 p.m. Friday at Montrose and 11 a.m. Saturday at Aspen to close the season with a ridiculous three-games in three days road trip.

Girls GolfThe Durango High School girls golf team closed out the regular season Monday with a tie for second place at the Gunnison High School Invitational.

The Demons posted a team score of 293 to match Gunnison for second place. Montrose won the team title with a 269 at the par-71 Dos Rios Golf Club in Gunnison.

Palisade rounded out the four-team field with a 301.

Faith Mewmaw posted the low round for the Demons with a 93. Mewman had four pars and birdied the par-4 15th hole.

Lily Tichi was ninth with a 99 and Madalen Meier placed 11th with a 101 to round out DHS’ three team scores.

Quinn Griswold shot a 106 and Grace Meyer fired a 122 to round out the Demons’ team.

DHS will next compete at its regional tournament. A date for the tournament has not been set.
