Manitou Springs scored on its first three shots and never let up in a 10-0 win at Bayfield High School on Friday.
In a top-20 showdown in Class 3A girls soccer, the Manitou Mustangs traveled the long road to Bayfield and wasted little time. Olivia McKenna scored 2 minutes into the match after a perfect crossing pass from Brooklyn Mack. Despite the pressure of Tayler Ludwig of Bayfield, Bridget Bodor blasted in a shot from the corner of the 18-yard-box over the head of BHS goalkeeper Kailee Millard for another goal only 4 minutes in.
In the ninth minute, Mack scored a goal of her own to make it 3-0 Manitou in a hurry.
Meghann Root scored on a header in the 12th minute off an assist from Katy Grieb. Caileen Sienknecht added a header of her own off a corner kick from Maddie Grant in the 25th minute.
Bayfield’s best shot perhaps came in the 35th minute, as a Savannah Kaufmann shot was saved by a sliding attempt from Mustangs’ goalkeeper Monique Heiniger, who made two saves in the game.
Before halftime, Manitou scored again, as Bodor lobbed a shot over Millard’s head to make it 6-0 at halftime.
Bodor recorded her third goal of the game 3 minutes into the second half, this time off a Mack crossing pass. Mack then scored in the 54th minute to make it 8-0 and end the day in goal for Millard, who was replaced by Lana McKee.
In the 77th minute, Taylor Holladay scored from 15 yards out for the Mustangs (2-0). The game ended with Mack earning her third goal in stoppage time.
Despite all the goals, Millard kept the game from ending sooner. The Bayfield senior goalie made 12 saves, and McKee, a senior, made two.
Bayfield (1-2) has a short turnaround from Friday’s game with an 11 a.m. Saturday game at home against St. Mary’s.
Facing a top-15 team in Class 5A was a tough task fro the Durango Demons in Grand Junction.
Cherry Creek of Denver scored three goals in each half to beat the Durango girls team 6-0 Friday.
DHS head coach Dalon Parker was inspired by the play of freshman goalkeeper Emily Badgley, who made nine saves, seven of which Parker said were head-turning efforts.
“It was amazing to watch her make these saves knowing she was only in eighth grade last year,” Parker said. “It’s going to be fun to watch to see how she gets better and continues to grow.”
The midfield and attack of Durango (1-3) has struggled to show consistency yet this season. The Demons will try to change that in their first home game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Aspen.
“Once we get more consistent, we will be more successful,” Parker said.
Baseball
BaseballThe Demons had a reversal of fortune Friday.
After losing a pair of game via walk-offs last week and suffering four losses by a combined five runs, Durango turned the tables and scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off a winner against Albuquerque Academy at the Piedra Vista Invitational at Ricketts Park in Farmington.
Durango (1-4) won 7-6, as a Dakota Padoven drive to right field scored the game-winning runs. The inning started with a couple of errors on the Chargers (6-2) of Albuquerque. Dawson Marcum reached to get the rally going, and Peyton Woolverton got a big hit to keep it going.
“Finally went our way,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said. “We’ve been feeling good about games, but losing is tough. Any kind of win can help you turn things around. I definitely think this is a start in the right direction.”
Woolverton started the game on the mound and went four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked three. He allowed only two hits and two earned runs. Gavin Mestas finished the final three innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs. He walked two.
DHS will close out two consecutive weekends of tournament ball at Ricketts Park with an 11:30 a.m. Saturday showdown with Farmington High.
“Hopefully we come out guns blazing,” Baker said. “We match up reasonably well to them.”
Boys Lacrosse
Boys LacrosseAfter blasting their opponents the first three games of the season, the Demons saw a tough test on the road Friday at Glenwood Springs.
Durango started slow but came away with a hard-fought 10-7 victory in the first road game of the season. Cullen Robinette had a huge game with five goals and one assist. Tommy Rodgers had three goals, and Kyle Robinette added two goals and four assists. TJ Rifkin and Collin Barkley each had one assist.
Dylan Gaver made eight saves for the Demons and had two goals against. Easton Verduzco was 11-of-17 on face-off wins.
Durango (4-0) trailed 1-0 early but responded to take a 2-1 lead on a Cullen Robinette extra-man goal assisted by Kyle Robinette.
The Robinettes established dominant play in the third quarter with two goals in 1:45 of play, as each brother assisted the other on the two goals.
Durango was up 9-1 after three quarters before inserting reserves.
“Best team we played all year,” head coach John Robinette said. “We’re happy with the win, but we were a little sloppy, especially the fourth quarter.”
The coach said his team will have to do better Saturday in a tough matchup at Aspen, a team the Demons have never beat before.
