Prep Roundup: Marcum blasts two homers for Durango baseball

Bayfield girls soccer thumps Center

The Durango High School baseball team lost six of its first eight games this season. In the last 10 days, the team has won three of its last four to get positive momentum going into this weekend’s league opener.

The Demons traveled to face Pagosa Springs on Tuesday and came home with a 17-3 victory in five innings. Durango scored one run in the first and four in the second, but the Pirates scored all three of their runs in the second to get back to within 5-3. DHS stretched the lead to 6-3 in the fourth before an 11-run onslaught in the fifth put the game away.

Elias Fiddler was the winning pitcher for Durango in four innings of work. He allowed four hits and three earned runs. The sophomore struck out three and walked three. Sophomore Ty Martinez locked down the final three outs in the fifth. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out one and walked one.

Dawson Marcum had a huge day at the plate with two home runs and a double, one of four doubles the Demons had in the game. Marcum was 4-for-4 with seven runs batted in and two runs scored. Al Hurworth also went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Fynn Hyson was 1-for-1 officially in four plate appearances. Around three walks, he also had a double to go with two RBIs and three runs scored. Seven different DHS hitters had an RBI, and 10 different Demons crossed home plate.

DHS (5-7, 0-0) will host Fruita Monument (6-8, 1-1) in its 5A/4A Southwestern League opener at 3 p.m. Friday. The same teams will meet again at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Girls Soccer

Bayfield 10, Center 0

Girls SoccerBefore a crucial weekend, the Bayfield High School girls soccer team (3-4) peppered Center (0-7) in a 10-0 mercy-rule win that ended in the 69th minute Tuesday at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield.

Seven different Bayfield players scored in the win, as Madison Oltmanns scored twice with goals in the seventh and 20th minutes. Madison Wells also scored twice in the 33rd and 44th minutes, while Emaliah Sawyer scored a pair in the 21st and 39th minutes. Both Sawyer goals were assisted by Tayler Ludwig, who had the game-ending goal in the 69th minute.

Halle Loveday scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute, and she added an assist on Oltmanns’ second goal. Cabri Schaefer had a goal in the 23rd minute. Mattie Moore scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Madi McInroy. Wells’ goals were assisted by Peri Milner and Brooke Merchant.

BHS is 1-1 so far in 3A Intermountain League play and will host Montezuma-Cortez and Alamosa at 4 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, respectively.
