Prep Roundup: Marshall, Isiordia lead Bayfield soccer past Montezuma-Cortez

Demons volleyball hits the road
Bayfield’s Colton Fine kept his head in the game when a ball came in front of his goal with Montezuma-Cortez’s Juan Para in position on a corner kick.

Goals came early and often for Bayfield on Tuesday.

The Bayfield High School boys soccer team traveled to face Montezuma-Cortez and came home with a 4-2 victory. It was the first win of the season for the Wolverines, who are now 1-1-1.

BHS senior captain Finlay Marshall opened the scoring only 2 minutes into the game. It was assisted by Alex Knight. Marshall also earned an assist on the game’s final goal scored by Bayfield junior Tilden Berriman. That goal came with less than 10 minutes to play and gave the Wolverines breathing room.

Bayfield’s other two goals were scored by junior Marcus Isiordia. The first came on a breakaway and gave BHS a 2-1 lead. He scored the game-winner in the second half.

A foul in the box in front of Bayfield senior goalkeeper Austin Bushnell led to the Panthers’ first score. Manny Martinez’s successful penalty kick tied the game at 1.

But Isiordia answered one minute later.

Cortez (1-2) tied the match at 2-all when Juan Parra sent a long pass over the top of Bayfield’s defense to Skyler Yarbrough, who finished in front of goal.

The Wolverines, led by first-year head coach Chris Zoltowski, will be back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Crested Butte.

Pagosa Springs 3, Durango 0

VolleyballSeeking their first win of the season, the Demons went hunting at the home of the Pirates but couldn’t find gold.

The Durango volleyball team fell 3-0 at Pagosa Springs on Tuesday night. The Demons were swept by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 to fall to 0-2 this season.

Ally Snow led DHS with seven kills, and Lana Razma added six. Ivy Kirwan had 18 digs, Josie Surmeier had five blocks, and Lauren Biery add three service aces.

“We’ve had kind of a slow start with only two games in the month we’ve been practicing,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said. “We were much improved from our loss at Monticello, and we will continue to get better.”

The Demons will try again Thursday in a match at rival Montezuma-Cortez (2-3).
