The Durango High School boys golf team finished in the middle of the pack Wednesday and Thursday in tournaments up north at The Bridges and Cobble Creek.
The Demons finished fourth of out of 10 teams in Monday’s tournament and had a similar fate at Montrose Thursday.
Kobe Szura’s 83 led the Demons, who finished with a team total of 255 on a tricky track at The Bridges that forced some big numbers on Monday. Montrose won with a team score of 215.
Ethan Whidden (85), Caleb Newman (87) Lucas Robbins (88) and Luke Tichi (90) rounded out the Demons’ varsity scores at The Bridges.
Before all groups were in Thursday, the Demons were again in the middle of the pack behind some tough competition up and down the Western Slope.
Newman led DHS with a 79 at Cobble Creek. Robbie Grogan fired 83, Tichi had 86, Robbins and Whidden each shot 87 and Szura posted 89.
Durango will host tournaments next Monday at Hillcrest and Tuesday at Dalton Ranch.
Boys TennisSteamboat Springs 6, Durango 1
Bayfield High School senior and Durango Demons tennis player Fred Edwards won again on Thursday, but that was it for DHS against Steamboat Springs.
In a tuneup for this weekend’s Western Slope Invitational, Edwards won a second set tiebreaker to beat Steamboats’ No. 1 singles player in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The rest of the Demons couldn’t post a win, however, as the Demons lost the final match count 6-1.
Boys SoccerComing off their first home loss in nearly three years, whoever was waiting to face Durango’s boys soccer team got a bad draw.
After dropping their last game 1-0 to Fruita Monument, the angry Demons took out their frustration with a 6-0 win at Aztec.
Jack Beattie, Juan Tejada, Elijah Fenton, Ben Brandt, Connor Henry and Addison Lyman had the goals for the Demons.
Trey Furnas had his third shutout of the year for Durango in the win.
VolleyballDurango 3, Montezuma-Cortez 1
The Durango High School volleyball team notched its first win of the season Thursday with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 12-25, 26-24) win at Montezuma-Cortez.
The Demons were led by Lana Razma’s 10 kills and 17 assists from Brianna Brown. Ally Snow had eight kills and Ivy Kerwin finished with 12 digs.
“I’m proud of the way we competed out there,” Demons head coach Colleen Vogt said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “It’s nice to get that first win under our belts and we can’t wait to play in front of our home fans.”
The Demons’ home opener is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Piedra Vista.
