Prep Roundup: Nucla Mustangs tame Ignacio Bobcats baseball

Bobcats fall for first time this week

A huge third inning sent the Nucla Mustangs riding past the Ignacio Bobcats baseball team Friday.

Nucla sent 15 batters to the plate in the third and scored 10 runs to claim a 13-0 lead. The Bobcats chipped away, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 19-6 loss in six innings.

The loss was only the second in the last six games for the Bobcats (6-8, 4-4 2A District 3/5). Class 1A Nucla improved to 7-8 overall behind a strong pitching performance from Trenton Armintrout. He pitched all six innings for the win.

Armintrout allowed four hits and walked four. He struck out 12, including all three batters in the sixth inning.

Juanito Medina was the losing pitcher for Ignacio. He allowed 12 hits and 13 runs in 2 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three before being relieved by Timmy Plehinger-Williams, who went the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up five hits and six runs. He struck out two, walked three and hit one batter with a pitch.

Marcus Chapman was 1-for-2 with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Bobcats. Nate Herrera was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. At the plate, Medina was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Ian Weinreich went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single that scored two runs.

Nucla’s Sladen Hendrickson went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. He finished a double shy of the cycle and could’ve earned the cycle but was held at first as a runner in front of him held at second.

Graden Steffan went 4-for-5 for the Mustangs with a three-run triple. He also scored four times.

Next for Ignacio is a league game Saturday at Dolores. It will be the fourth game this week for the Bobcats, who would go 3-1 with a win.
