Prep Roundup: Quick thinking leads Bayfield soccer past Alamosa

Wolverines’ OT winner stuns Mean Moose

Tilden Berriman knew well enough he could opt to play quickly when the referee whistled for a free kick for the Wolverines. That quick thinking delivered a win for the Bayfield boys soccer team Friday.

Bayfield and Alamosa completed regulation tied 1-1 and played through one period of extra time without a golden goal. When Alamosa was whistled for a foul in the second overtime, Berriman played the advantage quickly and caught the Mean Moose off guard. He played a perfect pass to Berman Abdallah-Boehm, and the Alamosa goalkeeper came off his line to try to make a play on the ball. Abdallah-Boehm chipped a shot over the goalkeeper, sending the Wolverines to a 2-1 home win, as the Wolverines mobbed Abdallah-Boehm in celebration.

The win sent Bayfield to a 5-2 record and 4-2 mark in the 3A Intermountain League. The five wins are the team’s most in at least eight years.

BHS went up 1-0 early, as Colton Fine scored on a volley after rebounding a corner kick opportunity in the 31st minute. Alamosa (2-4, 2-3 IML) answered back moments later, as Jose Mateo-Andres scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute.

The score remained that way until the 98th-minute winner.

Fine played a remarkable game for the Wolverines. From his position in the field, he made two saves to help BHS goalkeeper Chad Winkler. The first came in the 48th minute when he backpedaled to clear a ball off the line. He made another in the 76th minute when he threw himself in front of a shot.

BHS didn’t get much time to celebrate its big win. The Wolverines will play at Crested Butte at noon Saturday.
