The Bayfield High School volleyball team picked up the first win of its season Thursday night at Monte Vista.
The Wolverines (1-1, 1-0 3A Intermountain League) swept the Pirates – 25-18, 25-14, 25-18 – to secure a league victory. The Pirates fell to 0-3 this season and 0-1 in the IML.
“All 13 varsity players participated on court through multiple lineups,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said.
“Set distribution has improved, so we were able to run our (middle hitters) more frequently. We worked to present a balanced attack system tonight. Defensively, our team tallied seven team blocks on the match to assist with slowing down Monte Vista hard drive swings.”
Jannika Pope led BHS with 10 kills, and Tymbree Florian had eight.
Mavis Edwards was a force with 17 digs and seven aces.
BHS will stay on the road until Sept. 20. The team will travel to the Lewis Palmer Tournament in Monument Sept. 8 for its next matches.
Facing one of the toughest teams in New Mexico, the Durango Demons came up short Thursday in Farmington.
The Piedra Vista Panthers (2-0) won 25-20, 25-20 and 25-10.
“They played really well tonight,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said of the opponent.
“They were just quicker than we were. They’re explosive. They’re a fun team to play, and it showed us some things we can get better at.”
Paige Ammerman had nine assists to lead DHS (1-2). Taylor Wolf had five kills and five blocks. Lily Chick had five kills and two aces, and Charlotte Hale had six digs.
Durango’s next game is Thursday at Farmington. DHS lost to the Scorpions 3-1 on Tuesday in Durango.
After two tough games, the Ignacio Bobcats responded in a big way on their home floor.
Ignacio (2-1, 1-0 1A/2A San Juan Basin League) won the first game of Thursday night’s home-opening volleyball match 25-19, but the Bobcats dropped the next two 25-15 and 25-22.
Facing a home loss against Ridgway (1-4, 0-1), the Bobcats dug deep and earned a 25-23 win in the fourth game to force a decisive fifth. Ignacio was more than decisive to finish the match, as it earned a 15-3 victory to win the match 3-2.
“We started off strong and then got a little complacent,” IHS head coach Thaddeus Cano said. “Then we turned up the fire. In the fifth, we dominated. I’m really happy with that performance.”
Makayla Howell had 15 kills and four aces for the Bobcats. Marisa Carmenoros led the team with 28 assists. Amethyst Egger-Morris had four aces, as did Carmenoros.
“We had a really strong serving game,” Cano said. “We were down two players with injuries and other girls stepped up. I brought some JV players for the defensive back, and the girls worked so well as a team together.”
IHS will play Thursday against Mancos at home. The match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
