Durango and Farmington clashed on the volleyball court for the second time in nine days Thursday. This time, it was on Farmington’s home court.
The result was no different, though. Farmington (3-0) swept the Demons with game wins of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-21. Again, self-inflicted errors brought down Durango.
“We had too many unforced errors,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said. “In volleyball, errors always happen. But we had silly errors tonight – missed a lot of serves, communication errors. Farmington puts the pressure on you, but we could have played better.”
Sierra Martin had six kills and five blocks for Durango. Millie O’Ketter had 11 digs. Taylor Wolf also had five blocks, and Paige Ammerman led the team with nine assists.
DHS fell to 1-3 overall to start the season. The gauntlet of Four Corners powerhouses will continue when the Demons host Piedra Vista at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Demons will open 5A/4A Southwestern League play at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 against rival Montrose.
“Montrose will be fun,” Vogt said. “They are well coached and always sound. it will be nice to play somebody different than PV or Farmington. They’ve been four of our five games. They’re great competition, and we’re lucky to drive an hour and play great competition, but it will be fun to see someone else.”
It was a tough night for the Ignacio Bobcats volleyball team.
The Bobcats (2-2, 1-1 San Juan Basin League) lost 3-0 at home to the rival Mancos Blue Jays. Mancos won the games 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22.
Ignacio was as close as 22-21 in the third game behind strong serving, but the Bobcats didn’t have enough to force a fourth game.
Mancos improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in SJBL.
Up next for the Bobcats is a match at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ouray.
