Prep Rounudp: Bayfield, Ignacio girls strong on the road

BHS girls win third in a row

The Wolverines made it a streak with a third consecutive win Tuesday, and two of those wins have come on the road.

Bayfield’s girls basketball team went to Sargent High School and held a consistent lead throughout the game, though a 12-point advantage was cut to five in the fourth quarter. Still, the Wolverines (4-4, 1-0 3A Intermountain League) did enough to pick up a 44-39 victory.

Tymbree Florian led BHS with 18 points, while Cayanne Carlson added eight.

“We controlled the tempo and pace,” BHS head coach Josh Kitchen said. “We did everything we wanted. It wasn’t a strong shooting night, but the girls found other ways to finish. The girls are starting to understand that going on the road anywhere is hard, and we’re real proud to do that and get a win.

“We didn’t quite finish the game the way we wanted to, but we went on the road against some talented players and our girls played pretty good defense. Part of being a young player is appreciating that it’s not always going to be pretty, but you have to fight through and a victory is a victory.”

Kitchen continued to be impressed by the rebounding effort from Macee Shultz and the all-around play of freshman Maddy Oltmanns.

The Wolverines will return home to host league foe Monte Vista (2-7, 0-2 IML) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday before another home tilt at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Centauri (9-2, 1-1 IML).

Ignacio 56, Mancos 21

The Bobcats raced out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and flew past the Bluejays on the road Tuesday in Mancos.

Ignacio High’s girls basketball team (6-4, 5-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) won a third consecutive game with the 56-21 victory at the Bluejays (0-10, 0-3 SJBL).

Charlize Valdez led Ignacio with 12 points. Avaleena Nanaeto added 10, while Ebonee Gomez scored eight.

IHS built a 33-11 halftime lead, as Nanaeto and Valdez each scored six points in the second quarter.

“We had a slow start but picked it up by the second half of the first quarter,” IHS head coach Justa Whitt said. “You’re not seeing as giant of a point spread as it could have been because I am trying to get the girls to work on some new things and made them slow it down. In order to have progress, we must do that in these weak league games.”

Isis Jaime led the Bluejays with eight points. Ericka Peacock scored six.

IHS played the first of four consecutive road games and will face Ridgway at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Telluride at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Boys Basketball

Mancos 59, Ignacio 48

Boys BasketballThe Bobcats dropped their second league game of the season after an 18-6 second quarter for the Bluejays helped sink Ignacio in a 59-48 road loss.

Mancos continued its SJBL surge with the win, as it improved to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in league.

Ignacio dropped to 4-7 and 2-2 in league with its young squad.

The teams were tied at 15-15 after one quarter before Mancos’ big second. After going down 45-30 after three quarters, Ignacio made up ground in the fourth, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

IHS will play a pair of games on the road to end the week with a 7 p.m. Friday trip to Ridgway and a 4 p.m. Saturday visit to Telluride.
