Mountain Studies Institute reminds residents that the San Juan National Forest plans to begin a prescribed burn Saturday, which could continue for two weeks, on 6,000 acres in the Saul’s Creek and Yellow Jacket area, located east of Bayfield off U.S. Highway 160.
Fire is a natural cycle in forest ecosystems, and managers conduct prescribed fires to restore fire cycles in controlled conditions, increase habitat diversity and remove overstocked fuels that are likely to start wildfires, such as shrubs, trees and pine needles.
