A prescribed burn of about 400 acres is planned for the Turkey Springs and Brockover Mesa areas northwest of Pagosa Springs as early as Monday.
Actual dates of the burns will depend on weather and fuel conditions. Burns will be adjacent to Turkey Springs, along Forest Service Road 629; East Monument, along Forest Service Road 630; Brockover Road, Forest Service Road 919; and Gopher Trail, Forest Service Trail 303.
In addition, 100 acres to be included in the burn are adjacent to First Fork Road, Forest Service Road 622, which is between Pagosa Springs and Bayfield.
Burns conducted by the San Juan National Forest are designed to reduce hazardous fuels, mitigate fire danger and improve habitat. They may occur over several days in areas of ponderosa pine, gambel oak and grass.
