Primary ballots coming in mail next week

Dear La Plata County Electors,

It's Election Season again! The Colorado Primary Election is on June 24, 2014.

If you are affiliated with the American Constitution, Democratic, or Republican Party and your registration is current, a mail ballot will be sent to you the week of June 2. If you have a change of address, you may update your voter information at www.govotecolorado.com or stop by our office in Bodo Park or the Bayfield Town Hall.

In order to vote in a Primary Election, you must affiliate with one of these political parties. A mail ballot will not be sent to you unless you affiliate by June 17. From June 18 through Election Day, you may affiliate at any of the three Voter Service and Polling Centers. Participation in the Primary Election will not affect your eligibility to vote in the General Election.

Voters affiliated with the American Constitution or Democratic Party do not have any contested races on their ballot; however, Colorado law requires County Clerks to send a ballot to any eligible elector affiliated with a major party if one party has a contested race. The Republican Party does have contested races, so we are required to mail ballots to all major party electors.

Your ballot may be returned via the U.S. mail using a 49-cent stamp or at a drop site location. This year, we have added a 24-hour ballot drop off location located at the Clerk and Recorder's main branch at 98 Everett St. All mail ballots are due by 7 p.m. on Election Day, June 24. Postmarks do not count.

If you choose not to use your mail in ballot, you are welcome to vote in person at one of the three Voter Service and Polling Centers. Please visit www.laplatacountyclerk.org for specific locations and times.

"Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting." -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Please vote!
