Processing glitch delays Durango School District 9-R paychecks

Durango School District teachers who were expecting paychecks Monday will have to wait one day before they are deposited in their accounts. The delay was blamed on a “processing error” discovered late Friday afternoon, said Julie Popp, spokeswoman for the school district.

Durango teachers expecting to see their paychecks electronically deposited on Monday will have to wait until Tuesday before the money hits their accounts.

The problem, said Julie Popp, spokeswoman for Durango School District 9-R, stemmed from a “processing error” discovered late Friday afternoon.

“We are working directly with the finance department to put safeguards in place to ensure that this error doesn’t occur again,” Popp said in an email Monday. “We have also discovered a positive partner with our banking institution through this process and have generated additional safeguards to avoid this position in the future.”

An email was sent alerting 9-R employees of the delay around 5 p.m. Friday.

Stephanie Snitselaar, president of the Durango Education Association, said in a telephone interview on Monday that she had not received any complaints about the delayed checks.

“9-R recognized a mistake had been made and moved to rectify it as soon as possible,” she said.

The district also offered to assist any employee who suffered an overdrawn check because of the delay in processing paychecks, Snitselaar said.

Snitselaar said if she hears complaints about the delayed checks, she would work with the district to ensure the problem does not reoccur in the future.
