I am watching as New Yorkers are protesting and outraged over a proposed 9.5% property tax increase being pushed by their commie Mayor Mamdani.
At the same time here in Colorado, we are experiencing much higher increases that is getting almost no attention. I live in Durango and also have a house in Placerville. From 2022 to 2025, our Durango taxes increased by 67%, with a 31% rise between 2022 and 2023 alone. In Placerville it is worse. From 2022 to 2025, we saw 118% increase over the same period with a 59% rise between 2022 and 2023.
We were not asked to vote on this, none of our representatives even mentioned it. It was just forced on us without warning or justification. This is unsustainable and irresponsible.
The state and local governments don’t need double the revenue over four years to operate. Just because property values increase does not mean that the state and county need budgets that increase at that same rate. At best, our increases should be pegged to inflation. Now we are stuck with these massive increases. Everyone is already struggling to meet their expenses. Why is our government not adjusting and cutting costs like the citizens are? We need to demand that our representatives fix this now.
