Protect mail-in voting and voting rights

Rather than focusing on addressing the affordability issues Americans are facing, the Republican majority in Congress has instead decided to focus on dubious claims about election fraud and voting rights.

The SAVE Act in the Senate requires that any change to party affiliation, name or address be accompanied by proof of citizenship and be changed in person. A Real ID, military ID or tribal ID will not suffice – you need to provide a birth certificate matching your current name or a valid passport. Theories that noncitizens are swinging elections are blatantly false. Analysis of the Heritage Foundation’s Election Fraud Cases database found only 77 instances of noncitizens casting a ballot between 1999 and 2023.

The new MEGA Act currently in the House will impose more restrictions on the election system by requiring a photo ID to vote and banning universal mail-in voting, which will greatly alter Colorado’s current election system of mail-in ballots. It will bar counting ballots arriving after Election Day and recheck the eligibility of those already registered on a continuous basis in a nationalized database. That means you! If the national database picks up any glitch – true or not – you lose your voting rights until you prove otherwise.

If you value the current mail-in voting system in Colorado and believe that our election officials in the state have worked to ensure free and fair elections, please contact Rep. Jeff Hurd and our senators and voice your opposition to this attack on the right to vote.
