Growing up in the United States, I took the right to vote for granted. It now seems that right is under challenge. If we allow any group or party to control our elections, we have surrendered our most important constitutional right as Americans.
We cannot excuse any politician who declares something true or correct without proof or data. Words alone do not make something true. That standard must apply across the board, regardless of party.
These are not abstract concerns – they are the foundation on which every other right depends. We must protect them for future generations, because dismissing the erosion of voting rights with an “oh well” is not an option.
I encourage The Durango Herald and all news agencies to make elections and constitutional rights a front-page priority – regularly, not just at election time – so that every citizen can follow, understand, and act.
