Psychotherapist starts suicide loss grief group in Bayfield

Residents expressed need for therapeutic resources
Nicole Fuller, a psychotherapist, is founding a support group in Bayfield for those bereaved by suicide.

A psychotherapist is founding a therapeutic support group in Bayfield for those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Nicole Fuller decided to start the group after giving a talk in September about depression, anxiety and risk factors for suicide at the Pine River Library, she said. During that meeting, the conversation turned to the lack of resources in rural Bayfield.

“It became clear to me there wasn’t enough support,” she said.

La Plata County’s rate of suicide was 34 deaths per 100,000 in 2017, according San Juan Basin Public Health. The national average is about 13 deaths per 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (It should be noted the county population is low, so rates can vary dramatically based on any change in the number of deaths.)

The number of people younger than 25 who have died by suicide in recent years has risen sharply.

Fuller’s group intends to help attendees understand the cycle of grief and help address feelings of isolation those bereaved by a suicide may experience. It is confidential, so participants can feel safe sharing, she said.

Those interested in the group should call Fuller at 769-2435. She plans to speak with each member of the group ahead of time to learn more about each person.

The group meets at 5 p.m. each Wednesday at 1327 Bayfield Parkway. It is $20 per person per session.
