As a local artist, I was very interested in the proposed sculpture for the 550/160 intersection and attended the Feb. 9 presentation at SKA Brewery by the three finalists.
The venue was small and there was a good turnout but it made it very difficult to get close enough to the presentation boards or the artists themselves to find out more about their qualifications and specific proposals.
I attempted to go onto the City’s website to get more information but the process is not user-friendly to say the least and seems designed to dissuade input rather than facilitate access.
This is a significant public art project and I had hoped the city would welcome public input.
I’m particularly concerned about the potential for driver distraction and believe the selected work should enhance the area and experience without creating a potential traffic hazard. I would like more information on all other submissions before rushing into a project of this scale.
I am familiar with Jeff Wise’s proposal in particular. I saw the beautiful maquette he carefully prepared, and know his qualifications as a sculptor and artistic aesthetics are stellar. I would like to ask that the city re-open the juried proposals and allow public involvement.
We all want to see the best possible outcome, with an installation that will reflect Durango’s spirit, and be an enduring addition to the town.
