Punk. It’s what’s for breakfast.
On Aug. 24 at J.Bo’s Pizza & Rib Co., punk bands will take over for Punk Rock Breakfast, an event that used to happen in Durango and is seeing a comeback thanks to organizer Amy Potter.
“There used to be a Punk Rock Breakfast way back in the day, I don’t even know how long ago, at Storyville (where Cantera is now),” Potter said. “I was thinking about how there’s no punk rock in Durango anymore – nobody puts on punk shows anymore, and I really wanted to bring punk rock back and thought about Punk Rock Breakfast and thought, ‘We should do this again.’”
And since then, there have been two – and now three – Punk Rock Breakfasts, the latest of which will also be a benefit for the CODY Project.
“I really wanted to do something for the community and wanted it to be a charity event, and especially with all the suicides, I really wanted something to go toward an organization already in town that provides those kind of services. It’s just a way to give back to the community,” Potter said.
The CODY Project was created in memory of Cody Ledford and T.C. Rockwell, two teenage boys who died by suicide. According to the organization’s website, the group works “collaboratively with other community resources on suicide prevention and mental wellness initiatives.”
Bands set to play are The Molly Nixons, Profetic Calaveras, The Hardly Cant’s, Timothy Hallow and Q&A.
This time around, Potter said, finding bands wasn’t nearly as challenging as it has been.
“The first show we only had two bands. Same with the second show, and they were the same two bands,” she said. “This one, we just had a lot of bands approach me – I went to some open mic nights and picked up some bands there, and it seems like there’s more of a local punk scene coming back. Only one of the original bands is returning; the rest are new to Punk Rock Breakfast.”
There’s no cover charge for the breakfast; patrons just pay for their breakfast and drinks, with part of the proceeds going to the CODY Project. Donations will also be accepted, and a raffle will be held.
“I’m super excited about the benefit element of it. The scene is definitely one of the more accepting scenes out there,” said Caleb Preston, vocals and guitar for The Molly Nixons. “We’re super excited to do a benefit; I think Punk Rock Breakfast is a really cool thing. Trying to promote the scene is really important to us. ... so just having the opportunity to have that here in any form is super rad. ”
Potter, she said she hopes these events will lead to the continued growth of a punk scene in Durango.
“I think it’s very important to support our local music scene, which I think Durango does a good job of,” she said, “I feel like when I was younger, there was a good punk scene in Durango; there was always punk music. And that’s kind of been lost. And I want to bring that back,” she said.
