As December has begun, skiers and snowboarders have been happy to see both Purgatory and Telluride Resorts increasing the number of trails open.

At Purgatory, nearly a foot of snow has fallen, including 11 inches in the last five days. The mountain has a 20-inch base and 37 trails are now open, including access to the back of the mountain. Seven lifts are in operation as well.

“While all that fresh powder promises great fun, Purgatory kindly reminds guests to always exercise caution on the slopes,” Purgatory spokeswoman Theresa Graven said. “Early season conditions persist, meaning hidden obstacles may still exist. Please stay on designated open trails for safety.”

Telluride opened to the public on Saturday. Eleven of the 147 trails are open, as well as five of 17 lifts. The current snow depth is 27 inches, and the season total is 44.8 inches. Telluride has gotten 4.8 inches in the last two days.
