Resort to open for summer on Saturday

Following a historic winter with record snowfall, Purgatory Resort will now switch gears for the summer.

The resort will open for the summer season on Saturday.

With snow still burying the terrain on top of Lift 1, the Purgatory Bike Park will be accessed using Lift 4, carrying bikers and their bikes up the hill until Lift 1 can open.

For mountain bike racers, the Trail Party Gravity Stage Racing Tour promises an exhilarating event on June 24. The Big Mountain Enduro will then return to the San Juans on July 6 for a unique blend of backcountry riding and lift-accessed stages.

Kids ages 12 and younger will continue to enjoy free unlimited mountain bike uplifts at the Purgatory Bike Park with a Power Kids season pass. From lift-served downhill mountain biking trails designed for experts to the flowy Shangri-La beginner trail, Purgatory has something for riders of all abilities who are looking to gain confidence or hone their skills.

Beyond the bike park, Purgatory Resort offers a wide range of on-mountain activities at the Village Plaza Base Area. Thrill-seekers can experience the adrenaline-pumping Inferno Mountain Coaster, the exhilarating Alpine Slide, the excitement of treasure panning, boarding and boating in Twilight Lake as well as scenic chairlift rides and a kids; off-road track. Day tickets includes half-day access to summer activities, a.m. or p.m., and are available for purchase both in advance and on-site.

Other highlights this summer include the Summer Brew craft beer and music festival on July 15, and the annual Mushroom and Wine Dinner and Mushroom Hunt events in August.

Carve Wars are scheduled for Aug. 4, featuring chain saw art and a live carving competition.

The Mountain Marmot trail race and Downhill Rockies bike race, meanwhile, will welcome the changing fall colors on Sept. 24 and Sept. 9, respectively.

Purgatory Resort is scheduled to operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until Aug. 13. The resort will then be open Friday through Sundays from Aug. 18 to Oct. 1. Free weekly live music is also on the resort’s calendar.
