Freestyle team wins state and national titles

The Purgatory Freestyle Ski Team brought home state titles at Purgatory and national honors at the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Junior Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho last week.

In Sun Valley, Trudy Mickel was crowned U15 Junior National Champion in single run moguls. She placed sixth in the nation to go along with a seventh place finish in dual moguls. Durango’s George McQuinn reached the podium with a bronze medal finish in dual moguls and a fifth overall finish in singles at the national competition.

The team also had a number of medal winning performances at Purgatory’s USSA Rocky Mountain Freestyle RQS/Devo State Championships.

The state championships included athletes between the ages of 7 and 14. The Purgatory squad went against teams from Winter Park, Aspen, Telluride, Vail, Steamboat Springs, Pajarito and Summit County with great success.

In Friday’s Rocky Qualifier, Cole Alexus started the medal run for Purgatory winning two bronze medals in the U13 division and overall categories in single run moguls. Hunter Rawles took gold and brother Freddy won bronze in the U15 and Hunter finished fourth in the state. Freddy Mickel finished fifth for U11 athletes while Aiden Qualyle finished seventeenth for U13 skiers.

The Purgatory Freestyle Team dominated the Devo series on Saturday winning four of the possible six different age groups. Amara and Balin Kirk won the girls and boys U9 age group while brother Jaden stomped a huge helicopter to win the U13.

Megan Faherty of Farmington, New Mexico took gold in the girls U13 division. Silver medal performances were earned by U11 Nina Quayle, U9 Chase Connors and U13 Ryan Bell with Kai Skowlund placing fourth.

Sunday’s dual mogul events took place at the Upper Bull course at Purgatory. Cole Alexus won his third bronze medal of the weekend and Hunter Rawles posted a sixth place finish. Freddy Rawles ending in a tie for ninth.
