The Purgatory Ski Team will offer Alpine ski racing, freeride and freestyle skiing programs for the 2018-19 season.
These teams provide the opportunity for winter athletes to excel and an opportunity to compete at local, regional, national, and international levels.
Those interested in Alpine ski racing will learn the technical skills it takes to race through the gates. Freeride is an all-mountain experience with athletes who will learn to safely jump cliffs, natural features and rip through powder on off-piste terrain. The freestyle team is for those eager to master moguls, park features and pipes and aerial jumping.
Training is offered at Purgatory Resort, Chapman Hill and Hesperus Ski Area.
The Purgatory Alpine Race Team offers children a chance to improve skiing through the technical aspects of racing gates. The Four Corners Freeride program offers a big mountain experience of exploring off piste terrain. The Purgatory Freestyle Team provides a chance to learn mogul skiing, park and pipe, and aerial jumping techniques. All teams offer training opportunities at Purgatory Resort, Chapman Hill and Hesperus.
“We get a number of athletes who have either gone through the Snowburners and the ATP programs at Purgatory or are advanced skiers looking to improve or specialize”, said Purgatory Ski Team Board President Kirk McKnight. “Our goal is to provide customized programs for intermediate to advanced skiers.”
This year’s orientation is set for Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Durango Public Library. New members are asked to attend from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., while returning skiers should attend from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Price information, training schedules and scholarship info will be detailed at the meeting. Scholarships are available through the Durango Winter Sports Foundation.
