Quick response saves home on fire west of Durango

Bicyclist passing by calls in house fire

A fast response from local firefighting crews saved a single-family home west of Durango from being completely consumed Thursday.

Scot Davis, spokesman for the Durango Fire Protection District, said a call came in around 11 a.m. that a home on County Road 125, about 9 miles west of Durango, was showing smoke.

“Had that call come in 10, 15 minutes later, that building would be gone,” Davis said. “Crews did an excellent job minimizing damage and not letting it go toward a total loss.”

Crews from Durango Fire Protection District, as well as Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District, responded to the fire.

Davis said no one was home at the time of the fire. Instead, a bicyclist pedaling by called in the report.

“That was a really good thing that bicyclists got that in that quickly,” Davis said.

As a result, only 10 percent of the home was damaged by fire. Smoke damage, however, affected about 75 percent of the home, Davis said.

He said only one person lives at the house but indicated the person hadn’t lived there for some time.

He said fire investigators are not disclosing any suspicions on what caused the fire until a complete investigation is conducted.

“We will wait and see what the outcome of the fire investigation is,” Davis said.
