The Bayfield High School volleyball team traveled to Farmington and stunned the mighty Piedra Vista Panthers in the first set. That woke up the Panthers.
Piedra Vista went on to win the next three sets to earn a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night.
Colorado Class 3A BHS (5-11, 4-4 3A Intermountain League) won the first set 25-20, but it was New Mexico’s Class 6A Piedra Vista (12-2) that roared back for wins of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-21 to close out the match.
“Solid game tonight,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “Younger players are riding to the level of play. Macee Schultz presents a strong net presence, and middle hitters Annie Fusco and Melissa Roberts are maturing this season.”
Foutz said Tymbree Florian ran the offense and was disruptive to the PV defense.
Tess Phelps led the Wolverines with eight kills, and Jannika Pope had six. Pope also had a team-high 16 digs, while Rachel Bauer added 15. Schulz had four blocks, and Fusco had three.
Bayfield will travel to play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alamosa.
